 Festival Special - 1 Makar Sankranti - 14 January 2022

The festival  of Makar Sankranti is observed all over India. In different parts of the country it is known by different names -’Lohri’ in Punjab, ‘Khichdi in Bihar”, Pongal in Tamil nadu and ‘Makar Sankranti’

in Maharashtra.

So we begin this article by wishing all our readers - ‘A Happy Makar Sankranti!’ - and as we say it in Marathi - “ Til gul ghya, goad goad bola “

We already know the significance of this day.  From the day of Makar Sankranti, the sun begins its north-ward journey or Uttarayan journey. Therefore, this festival is also known as Uttarayan- coming from  ‘Uttarayan” Uttar +Ayan ( Moving towards North ) where the Sun advents from the Tropic of Capricorn (Makar Vrutta) while entering the Zodiac Sign of Capricorn and moves toward the Tropic of Cancer (Karka Vrutta)  till 21st June.

This day marks a major geographical event - during the winter season, nights are long and days are short . You must have observed that the night is longest on Dec 21. Thereafter the nights get short and the days get longer. Winter gradually goes away making way for Spring.

This important event is celebrated as people consume food that keeps them warm in winter - such as sesame and jaggery, In Punjab,  a bon-fire is lit to fight the cold  and to  celebrate the nearing end of winter while expecting the onset of the harvesting season. The long night is over and the days of the gods are here; thus, Pongal is celebrated by cutting paddy.

There is also the mythological story attached to it the story of Makar Sankranti

The story of  'Sankranti', who killed the demon 'Sankarasur' and the second day after Makar Sankranti - is called 'Karidin' on this day the goddess killed a demon named - 'Kinkarasur' -
